"White Christmas" gets the George Shearing treatment. Block chords, drop-2 voicings, the locked-hand style that made Shearing's sound immediately recognizable. One of the most elegant approaches to melody in jazz piano, and a great place to start.

"O Christmas Tree" becomes a Red Garland showcase. Syncopated left-hand comping, that behind-the-beat feel that defined the rhythm section on so many great Miles Davis records. This is where you start to understand what "swing" actually sounds like from the inside.

"I'll Be Home for Christmas" opens up into a lush ballad with five and six-note voicings. This version does what a great ballad is supposed to do. It breathes, it lingers, and it actually sounds the way the tune feels.

"Santa Claus is Coming to Town" in a style inspired by Erroll Garner. Nobody swung harder or more joyfully than Garner, and this tune is where that energy belongs. This is the one that gets the room going.

The series closes with a student showcase. After eight weeks of focused work, students performed everything they'd learned. You can hear what this actually sounds like in people's hands after working through it seriously.
